Field Trip: Swifts Night Out

Chimney Swifts start to band together into large roost groups before their fall migration to South America.  Locally, in recent years, thousands of these birds have used the chimney at the Carolina Theatre and nearby chimneys in Greensboro and in nearby Kernersville for such a large amassing. It is quite impressive to watch them in this annual behavior, as they circle above and all around, and then begin to spiral into the building at sunset, hundreds at a time.

*This is a joint activity with Piedmont Bird Club..

Location: Based on what we've seen so far this year, Swifts Night Out will be at the Guilford County Schools administration building at 501 W. Washington St. in downtown Greensboro, between Edgeworth and Spring Streets.  There is a large parking lot behind the building with excellent views of the chimney.

We all know there are no guarantees, but this has been a good spot in the past.  Last night 750+ swifts were spotted at this location. The first few birds were there around 7:00. with 100 or so by 7:20.  Things picked up quickly after that with more birds coming in around 7:30.  By 7:45, as it was getting dark, there were 750 swifts.  They started going in the chimney at 7:49, which took several minutes.
