The Piedmont Environmental Center connects to the Bicentennial and High Point Greenways and offers miles of hardwood and pine forest trails with lakeside views. The PEC also offers nature programs and classes and features a nature center with native Piedmont reptiles on display, including turtles and snakes. Bonus: onsite bird feeders offer up close birdwatching opportunities!

Join us Sunday, September 27 from 12 – 2 p.m. to search for wildlife, plants, insects, fungi, and anything else that catches our eye. We will meet in front of the building and begin our exploration around the building perimeter, checking out the native plant habitats and bird feeders. From there, the group can decide whether to walk on the greenway or the nature trails. We will walk a total of about 2-2.5 miles.

With bird migration underway, we’ll look for fall and winter migrants, shorebirds, raptors, corvids, woodpeckers, and more. These may include:

·       Early seasonal visitors: yellow-rumped warblers, ruby-crowned kinglets, hermit thrush

·       Shorebirds: Great Blue Heron, Great White Egret, Sandpipers

·       Raptors and corvids: Turkey and Black Vultures, Red-shouldered Hawks, American Crows, and possibly Ravens migrating through

We’ll return to the Center and wind down with another look for birds at the feeders. A few chairs are available nearby, and you’re welcome to bring a camp chair if you’d like to stay awhile.
