Field Trip: Occoneechee Mountain State Natural Area

  • Occoneechee Mountain State Natural Area 625 Virginia Cates Road Hillsborough, NC, 27278 United States (map)

Occoneechee Mountain is the highest point (867 ft.) from Hillsborough to the coast and is home to a variety of plants and animals more often found in the mountains–for example, Brown Elfin butterflies, more than 100 miles from any other population of the species. In May, a spectacular show of Mountain Laurel is a highlight, and bird life includes many neotropical migrants, Pileated Woodpeckers, and other residents. It is a beautiful walk and one of the most important natural areas of the Triangle.
