TRIP TO THE CASCADES PRESERVE: A GUILFORD COUNTY NATURAL AREA
Guilford County's 14 preserves total about 1700 acres.
One of the most spectacular, the Cascades Preserve comprises about 120 acres in the northwest corner of the county. This natural area features steep wooded bluffs, a great diversity of flora, and, of course, a cascading stream that drops perhaps 100 feet or more over wonderful rock outcroppings. A very scenic loop trail samples all of these features of the preserve. Interestingly, the streams in the Cascades Preserve are not in the Cape Fear River basin, but rather in the Roanoke River drainage, flowing north into a tributary of the Dan River.
Want to see this special place yourself, and check out the spring wildflowers? Then come along on this month's Second Sunday Nature Walk, SUNDAY, APRIL 14.
Meet between the Chick-Fil-A and the BB&T Building under the Sears Plaza sign in the Whole Foods parking lot, Friendly Center, at 1:45 for car pooling to the site, a 40 minute drive. As always, if it is raining we cancel. If it is just cloudy or misting, we go. We will be back by 5:30 or before.
With all the recent rain the trails may be wet, and parts are a bit hilly, so wear appropriate shoes. Bring bug spray as the ticks are out early this year. Call or e-mail Jack Jezorek 336-885-0669 (firstname.lastname@example.org) for more information.
Those wanting to meet at the site can park at the trail head:
7359 Goodwill Church Rd. Kernersville NC 27284.
